Public Art Project at Light Horse

A Moment in Time and Memory

Industrial spaces have traditionally been designed with efficiency in mind—but as the nature of work evolves, so too should the environments we create. At Light Horse Logistics Hub, we believe that industrial precincts should be more than just places of business; they should be spaces where people thrive and connect.

A forward-thinking approach to industrial design considers not just functionality, but also well-being, cultural identity, and community engagement. By integrating public art, green spaces, and thoughtfully designed communal areas, we can transform logistics hubs into places that enhance the experience of those who work and visit there daily.

With this focus in mind, a bespoke art installation, “A Moment in Time and Memory,” has been created at Light Horse Logistics Hub in collaboration with artist Patrizia Biondi and consultants Art Pharmacy. This sculpture celebrates the rich history of the site, which has long been significant to the First Nations People, the Light Horse Brigade, and a Migrant Hostel, before becoming the logistics hub it is today.

The installation features a 2.8-metre sculpture and a 2.3-metre bench seat, both placed in the café precinct, centrally located in the heart of the estate for all to enjoy.

The sculpture’s multiple timber rays symbolise the intersecting histories of the land and the diverse people who have lived and worked there. The timber references the huts that once sheltered post-war migrants, embodying solidarity and shared experience.

The sculpture’s side panels incorporate colours inspired by local flora, with pink and blue hues representing the day and night sky, connecting the artwork to its natural surroundings. Developed with input from a First Nations landscaper, these colours also appear on the communal seat, which offers a space for rest, conversation, or reflection.

Together, the sculpture and bench reflect the balance between movement and stillness, inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and engage with the land’s history.
