2016-2021
What career achievement are you most proud of?
Charter Hall’s Raine Square development has got to be a highlight. The opportunity to be heavily involved in the entire process is something I really valued and considerably broadened my knowledge of the property industry. The entire process was driven by a passionate team, and I am so proud to have been a part of it. Bringing the cinemas back to Perth’s CBD and creating a luxury precinct in the heart of the city is an amazing accomplishment.
What is the most valuable lesson you learnt during your time at Charter Hall?
I really learnt to challenge myself by being encouraged to say yes to opportunities that were offered, even if they scared me. Charter Hall fosters an environment where failure isn’t an option, but an opportunity to learn. Saying yes to an additional project or helping someone in another team, even if I wasn’t sure what to do or how to help, grew my confidence, experience and knowledge.
Who would sit around the table at your ideal dinner party?
My dad and my younger brother who have both passed away. Jeff Bezos, Noel Fielding and Elvis Presley.
What are you currently working on that has you excited?
I am currently working through a strategy for a shopping centre in which the syndicate expires in the next six months. Strategy is something I love and working with our development team to find development opportunities, discussing lease tenure with the majors and working through all the possibilities for the property has me inspired. I am confident there is an opportunity to increase the valuation of the property and increase the return for our investors.
Our Alumni is founded on the idea of ‘Connection for life’, how have you embraced this?
I made so many connections for life at Charter Hall. There are many people I would consider lifelong friends, and many others I will always consider as close colleagues, who I can call on when I need advice or direction.
What have been your key learnings transitioning from property management to investment?
I feel like I am still transitioning from property management into investment, but one of the learnings so far, is what mattered to me as a Property Manager isn’t necessarily what a Fund Manager or investor focuses on. I have had to switch from thinking about the day-to-day management of a property, into continually thinking about the property strategically and what will create value for our investors. It hasn’t been easy to take a step back, but trusting the managing agent to look after the property operationally, has allowed me to redirect my focus.
Knowing what you know about investing in the property market, what’s the one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
Start asking questions sooner. Find out who to talk to about investing and how to create a financial plan. Read everything you can and start off small and you are never too young to invest in your future!
